The main activities of Mait Ltd. cover all aspects of road construction including leveling, construction of road base and laying of hot asphalt base and wearing courses as well as construction of kerbs and footpaths.
The company produces hot and cold asphalt (tarmac) at its own, fully computerized plant at Luqa capable of churning out 90 tonnes of hot asphalt per hour. The asphalt mixes consist essentially of fine and course aggregates and bitumen.
Coarser aggregates are used in the underlying base course mixes while selected fine aggregates are used in the final wearing course. Other mixes can be produced to clients' requirements such as an extra fine colour mix for tennis court surfacing, as well as polymer modified bituminous mixes with improved strength and surface drainage characteristics.
Chemical additives for the production of bituminous emulsion are imported directly by the company whereas bitumen is supplied by another company in which Polidano Group has a substantial shareholding. This product is stored in vast underground storage tanks adjacent to the plant. Crushed limestone aggregates and sand are supplied by Lapsi Quarry, another member of the Polidano Group. Bitumen emulsion is produced by Mait Ltd. This product is also used as a track coating which is sprayed prior to laying of asphalt, in the production of cold asphalt instant road repair material and as a binder in cold in-place road recycling.
Mait Ltd. can boast an array of state-of-the-art machinery. Pride of place goes to the only cold in-place road recycling machinery in Malta. This machine breaks up damaged surfaces, simultaneously mixing the recycled material with a bitumen emulsion recycling the mixture as the machine progresses along the road.
The company follows strict operating procedures at all stages. Mait Ltd was awarded ISO 9002 Certification in July 1997. The standard reassessment by BSI is randomly carried out throughout the year to ensure that the highest possible standards are maintained at all times.
